Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my primary care physician want me to see a specialist for my lungs?

Your primary care provider may determine a lung condition or symptom warrants further investigation by a specialist.

Will I have a procedure performed at the first visit?

No. Your first visit with the pulmonary specialist will be a face-to-face encounter that will provide an opportunity for discussion.

Do I need to see the specialist for more than one visit?

Depending on your lung condition or symptom, the specialist will provide you with a recommendation for treatment and specific testing needed. This may include a procedure or medication. A second visit will be scheduled for follow up to assess any medications initiated or to review procedures completed.

If a procedure is recommended, where will it be done?

Procedures will be performed at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

What can I expect the first visit will be like?

The specialty nurse will greet you and escort you to the exam room. Vitals will be measured. Please bring your list of medications to the appointment. Allergies and medications will be reviewed. Then the specialist will visit with you. Discussion regarding your past medical history and any current conditions or symptoms will be reviewed along with the physical exam. If your testing has been completed at another facility rather than McFarland Clinic, it is very important that you bring any recent CT scans or CXR’s to this appointment. The specialists will review these images and make a recommendation at this visit.

Do I still need to continue to see my primary care provider?

Yes. It is important to continue to see your regular provider for your primary needs. The specialist and primary care provider will develop a coordinated care plan for you during this period.
