McFarland Clinic’s Allergy-Immunology specialists provide evaluation and treatment of immunologic conditions and allergic diseases of the respiratory tract, eyes and skin for both adults and children. Specific diseases followed by the allergist-immunologist include asthma, hay fever, hives, food allergy and immune deficiency.
Diagnostic testing, including skin testing and RAST for pollens, molds, animals and foods, may be part of the evaluation. Testing for drug allergy and bee sting allergy is also available. Allergy shots (immunotherapy) may be part of the treatment program when indicated.
Education in understanding the disease, environmental control, and proper use of medications is provided. The Allergy-Immunology education program also includes asthma workshops for patients and educational talks for healthcare providers.
The Pediatric Pulmonology Department, which is combined with the Allergy-Immunology Department, provides evaluation and treatment of respiratory conditions from birth through adolescence. Respiratory conditions followed through this department include asthma, cystic fibrosis, recurrent pneumonia or bronchitis, stridor, infant apnea and near miss SIDS (Sudden infant death syndrome). Complete lung function testing, including exercise inhalational challenge and eNO, is available to evaluate lung diseases. Appropriate evaluation and home monitoring is available for infant apnea.
McFarland Clinic is a Cystic Fibrosis Center associated with the University of Iowa Cystic Fibrosis Center.
