With many advances in orthopedic sports medicine, it seems amazing that we have not seen a decrease in the incidence of ACL injuries. It's true that we have not witnessed a downward trend of these injuries in spite of increased awareness and programs designed to strengthen muscles around the knee and improve neuromuscular control. |

Football season is finally here. It is one of my favorite times of the year and taking care of Iowa State football is one of the best parts of my job as an Orthopedic Sports Surgeon here in central Iowa. As the season progresses, we will likely have reason to discuss various aspects of Sports Medicine as it relates to college football. Before we get to that, however, I decided to blog today on an awesome international wrestling experience from which I just returned.

When Spring semester is over, the football players get a couple weeks off before starting their summer conditioning program that lasts from May through July. This includes an intensive eight week session of workouts to improve strength, speed and performance under the direction of Clayton Oyster and the ISU strength & conditioning staff. They also are allowed some limited interaction with coaches, working in position groups on skill development. |
