Permanent hair removal is an intriguing option for those ready to forgo the ongoing routine of shaving, waxing, tweezing, etc., to achieve the smooth skin they desire.
At McFarland Clinic, the Dermatology Department offers a laser hair removal treatment using the LightSheer laser, a laser that destroys hair follicles while minimizing any injury to the surrounding skin. This treatment can be used on almost any part of the body desired to achieve permanent hair reduction.
The treatment is performed at multiple appointments since it only works on hair follicles in the active growth phase, and there is never a time when a person's hair follicles are all in an active growth phase. During the initial treatment, an assessment will be made on the skin's response, and adjustments will be made to the laser's light characteristics to help achieve maximum results in future appointments.
The LightSheer laser system works best on those with light skin and dark hair - they can expect a 50-75% permanent reduction in hair on the treated area with two to three treatments. Those with lighter hair will not see as much of a reduction in permanent hair removal, and patients with pigmented skin (resulting from ethnic background or suntan) are more likely to have side effects - such as blistering of the skin on the treated area - and will likely see less permanent hair removal.
