While an x-ray might be the most common imaging test performed at McFarland Clinic, it’s certainly not the only one – in fact, more than 30,000mammograms, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans, and ultrasounds were completed in 2010 alone.

Along with these common tests, other imaging services offered by McFarland’s team of radiologists and radiology technologists include computed tomography (CT) scans, fluoroscopy and bone densitometry.

All of these services, as part of McFarland Clinic’s effort to provide patients with complete, coordinated care, are performed by caring professionals with a great deal of expertise, says Imaging Services Director Deb Thompson.

“Many of the technologists have advanced certification in the modality (i.e., CT, MRI, bone densitometry, ultrasound, mammography, etc.) they work in. The advance certifications are not required and many establishments do not have this level of expertise in their departments, but at McFarland Clinic it is very common,” Thompson said. “Competency in performing exams and in-depth knowledge about their chosen area of expertise must be proven before a technologist is able to obtain the advanced certifications.”

Several of the clinic’s radiologists have advanced training as well – two have additional training in neuroradiology and one has extra training in nuclear medicine.

Of course, an expertly trained team isn’t the only reason patients make use of the imaging services conveniently offered at numerous McFarland Clinic offices, says Thompson – the advanced technology used by the Radiology Department is another benefit the clinic has to offer.

“Two of the most recent pieces of equipment added at McFarland Clinic, a 3.0 T MRI and a PET/CT, allow patients to be imaged using some of the most advanced technology found anywhere in Iowa,” Thompson said. “These units were specifically chosen because of the ability to provide optimal image quality and designs that ensure the most comfort for patients…For PET scans, the length of [the] exam was cut nearly in half when compared to the patient experience when done in the replaced PET scanner. The CT portion of the PET/CT was also selected because it provides excellent quality images but exposes patients to less radiation than other models evaluated.”

Along with these new machines, most of the McFarland Clinic sites offering radiology have digital imaging capabilities. According to Thompson, these capabilities allow reports to be made available to the provider ordering the test much quicker, and providers in multiple areas can view the images at the same time.

“At all McFarland Clinic locations except Iowa Falls, Webster City, and Carroll East, digital imaging is used to allow the images to be incorporated into patients’ electronic medical records,” Thompson said. “The ordering providers can look at the written report and a link to the images is within the report. Images obtained at any of the locations that have digital imaging capabilities can be seen by any provider within McFarland Clinic on their computer.”

Although all test results are interpreted by the team of radiologists in Ames, there are radiology technologists at most McFarland Clinic locations, offering a variety of services. Learn more about the services offered at your local clinic:
