Leadership from Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center (MMSC) and McFarland Clinic are pleased to announce a new partnership to expand cancer services in Marshalltown. While McFarland Clinic has offered medical oncology and surgical services locally for many years, this partnership would expand on the current cancer services to add radiation therapy treatment options.
“What’s significant about this enhancement to the long-standing partnership between MMSC and McFarland is the ability to increase exceptional cancer care, close to home, said John Hughes, MMSC CEO. “The McFarland Clinic Medical Oncologists have provided outstanding care to area patients. We are delighted at the prospect of adding McFarland Radiation Oncology to our proposed cancer treatment center.”
MMSC has submitted an application to the state Health Facilities Council for approval to add radiation therapy services on its new campus at the intersection of Highways 14 & 30. On October 21st, the Health Facilities Council will meet to decide on MMSC’s application.
Representatives from MMSC and McFarland Clinic will be present at the Council meeting to testify in support of its application. Over 1200 letters of support from community members were submitted in support of the cancer center and will be shared with the Council.
If approved by the Council, MMSC will move forward on building the cancer center and install a Varian TrueBeam Linear Accelerator to provide radiation therapy services. MMSC will be the sole owner of the proposed cancer center, and will partner with McFarland Clinic’s radiation oncologists to provide professional services. The expected completion date would be the summer of 2016. McFarland’s radiation oncologists currently provide radiation therapy services in Ames and Fort Dodge.
“McFarland Clinic has been providing medical oncology services in Marshalltown for the past 25 years,” said Jodi Faustlin, McFarland Clinic Marshalltown Executive Director. “The opportunity to increase our oncology services with radiation therapy will be of tremendous benefit for patients, their family and friends. We are hopeful the Council will support us in providing the best care possible close to home.”
The radiation oncologists from McFarland Clinic are Dr. Shane Hopkins and Dr. Gregory Yee. McFarland Clinic medical oncologists are Dr. Debra Prow and Dr. Joseph Merchant.
