This week's Expert Answer is from Nancy Schive, dietitian for McFarland Clinic in Marshalltown, IA.

Why are whole grains better for me than simple grains?

Studies have shown that whole grain foods, as part of a healthy diet, may help lower your risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some forms of cancer.  The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that half of all carbohydrates in the diet come from whole grains.  For additional information and ideas for including more whole grains in your healthy eating plan, go to www.wholegrainscouncil.org
