Infectious Diseases

An infectious disease physician specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of infections that are not commonly seen by a primary care physician. These infections may affect healthy people who have been exposed to uncommon bacteria, viruses or fungi in special circumstances, such as travel. More commonly, the infections affect people with underlying health problems that make them more prone to infections.

Illnesses treated by an infectious diseases physician include tuberculosis, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), fungal infections, bone infections, heart valve infections, infections acquired while in the hospital, infections acquired by contact with insects, animals, and infections resulting from antibiotic-resistant organisms.

Another important role of the infectious diseases specialist is to provide information to the public and other physicians on the prevention of dangerous infections through use of immunizations, lifestyle changes, and appropriate use of available antibiotics.
