NeurologyNeurologists treat disorders of the nervous system (brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves) and muscles. Common entities include epilepsy, tumors, degenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, headaches, stroke, muscular dystrophies, and peripheral neuropathies. A neurologist is often consulted to rule out a neurologic cause of unexplained pain.Tests available to help in the diagnosis of neurologic disease include electroencephalography (brain wave analysis); electromyography (muscle and peripheral nerve analysis); transcranial doppler (test done with ultrasound to evaluate circulation in the brain); polysomnogram or sleep study (which is an overnight test done at the Sleep Lab in the hospital to diagnose sleep disorders); Botox (Botulinum toxin injection is a therapeutic intervention used to treat excessive muscle contraction/over activity. This can result from several neurologic conditions including cerebral palsy, stroke, multiple sclerosis, head trauma, dystonia, Parkinson’s disease, and migraine or muscle contraction (tension) headaches).
