Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology is the medical science that studies the digestive system. Symptoms that frequently send a patient to a gastroenterologist include difficulty swallowing, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, passing blood in the stool and yellow jaundice. A few specific disease entities diagnosed and treated by a gastroenterologist include peptic ulcer disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease), pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas, usually from gallstones), viral hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver and cancer of the esophagus, stomach, and colon. A gastroenterologist commonly utilizes advanced equipment to assist in diagnosis (primarily instruments that enable him or her to visualize the lining of the intestinal tract).
