What is Mohs Micrographic Surgery?
It’s a specialized surgical treatment for skin cancer which can provide the highest cure rate while removing the least amount of surrounding healthy tissue.

Indications for Mohs Micrographic Surgery
• Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) and Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) on the face and scalp

• Aggressive subtypes of BCC (morpheaform, infiltrative, micronodular, metatypical) and SCC (poorly or moderately differentiated)

• Recurrent SCC or BCC

• BCC or SCC > 2cm on any body site

• Lentigo Maligna, Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans, Atypical Fibroxanthoma, Microcystic Adnexal Carcinoma, Extramammary Paget’s Disease

Before Referral to Mohs…
• A definitive diagnosis of skin cancer based on a biopsy is needed. Patients may be referred to Dermatology for biopsy if needed (515-239-4492 to schedule patient with Dermatology Department)

• The location, approximate size and type of tumor, along with basic patient information (including patient history of a pacemaker &/or defibrillator) is appreciated

• A faxed copy of the pathology report sent at the time of making the appointment is requested

• A glass pathology slide of the tumor will be requested by the Mohs unit staff for review at the time of surgery
