About ComplicationsAs varicose veins impair circulation, several complications such as blood clot (phlebitis) can occur. A blood clot can develop in either the deep or superficial veins. Because circulation is slow, the wall of the vein can become inflamed and result in clotting of blood. When the superficial vein is involved, the vein bulges, becomes reddish and tender to touch. In the past, we didn’t bring too much attention to the superficial blood clot because from the superficial vein system a clot normally cannot move to the lung. But recently, some studies have demonstrated that if a patient is a carrier of a superficial blood clot, the deep vein system is at the same time involved in 30-40% of the patients. The involvement of the deep vein system is a more serious condition and can be potentially life threatening.Bleeding is another less frequent complication. Bleeding usually occurs around the ankle where the pressure becomes so intense the wall of the vein ruptures and bleeds. Instant treatment includes lying down and raising the legs and seeking medical attention. Swelling is more frequent in older people and worsens at the end of the day. As pressure increases inside of the vein, the wall dilates and part of the blood diffuse through the vein wall and accumulates under the skin to create swelling. To reduce swelling, adequate medical stockings should be worn. The McFarland Vein Center offers expertise in fitting stockings and provides a selection of medical stockings for purchase. The accumulation of swelling may produce a dermatitis or inflammation that can progress to an ulcer. Approximately 500,000 Americans are affected by such chronic ulcers, which tremendously affects the quality of life. By correcting swelling with appropriate medical stockings, patients will heal ulcers more quickly.
All these conditions are treatable and can usually be cured by conservative treatment.
