About Causes

A leading cause of varicose veins in women and men is hereditary. According to a recent study, more than one gene can be passed on causing a genetic defect in the vein wall. If a person is a carrier of a large varicosity, he or she can usually find a close relative or family member who also has varicose veins.

The second leading cause in varicose veins in women is due to pregnancy. During pregnancy, the blood volumes nearly doubles creating abundant tension on the vein wall. Multiple pregnancies can increase the development of varicose veins. Research also indicates that estrogen affects or favors the development of varicose veins.

Additional factors such as excess of weight, long periods of sitting or standing, heavy lifting, injury and use of birth control pill can increase the risk for varicose veins.

Aging plays a major role in the development of varicose veins. Nearly 50% of individuals over the age of 70 experience some form of varicose veins.
